Also gone are the light protectors that were adapted to the G in some versions of the previous generation. In the AMG, the grille also adopts the design of today’s AMG supercars. Engine performance of the Mercedes AMG G63
Two versions are available: the Mercedes-Benz G 500 and the Mercedes-AMG G 63, both powered by a 4-litre V8 engine turbocharged by two turbochargers.
The G 500 produces 422 hp from 5,250 to 5,500 rpm and 610 Nm from 2,000 to 4,750 rpm, reaches a top speed of 210 km / h and goes from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds.
The G 63 produces 585 hp at 6,000 rpm and 850 Nm from 2,500 to 3,500 rpm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 220 km/h.
Both come with a 9-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system that sends 40% of the engine torque to the front axle and 60% to the rear. However, fuel consumption is very excessive with 13.2 liters per 100, according to official figures. For this, Mercedes has installed a cylinder deactivation system that allows the engine to run on fewer cylinders at low revs, thus consuming less fuel. It is able to deactivate cylinders two, three, five and eight thanks to selective cylinder deactivation with AMG cylinder management.
Totally different driving
The G 63 offers supercar dynamism. Considerable effort has been made into the suspension to improve dynamic handling and reduce weight as much as possible. At the front, there are Z-shaped lower arms and a new five-link rigid rear axle that optimises driving comfort.
In the previous AMG G63, you had to get used to driving and learn what the car allowed you on the road. Its ball recirculation steering was ideal for off-road driving, but for sporty driving? It left much to be desired. The new electromechanical steering and the now revised front and rear suspensions make it a true supercar almost a sports car. Only if you drive it and have tried the previous ones will you be able to realize how much it has improved.
On a twisty road, it’s almost as good as a GTI and can even outperform several iconic sports cars. I’m talking about a Golf R Variant or even a high-performance RS6. Few cars have the equipment and space to offer such an off-road experience.
It introduces the fact that the gearbox is now 9-speed and the V8 engine features AMG Cylinder Management, a selective cylinder deactivation. Fuel consumption can be quite low, provided you drive gently.
The brakes do not hold as well as before. The thing is, you can now drive light years faster than the previous model. A torsion bar suspension over the front struts significantly increases stiffness, which also helps improve cornering stability.
